Children's Paris Sweater- a crochet heart sweater

The Children’s Paris Sweater is a beautiful fair isle crochet heart sweater that’s full of love! Make this for your little one for Valentine’s Day or to wear year round!

What is Fair Isle Crochet?

Fair isle crochet is a technique used to do crochet colorwork. You can create so many designs and color changes with this technique! It is simple changing colors and “floating” your unused yarn behind the project until you need to use it again.

Pattern Details

The Children’s Paris Sweater pattern comes with instructions for children’s sizes 2-10. It is worked from the top down, first in rows to create the chest and shoulders, and then in the round for the crochet heart motifs section and the sleeves.

The crochet heart sweater pattern calls for DK (#3) weight yarn. I used Lion Brand Coboo for the sample sweaters. You will need at least 2 colors for this project, but can use more if you prefer.

Children's Paris Sweater - a crochet heart sweater laid flat with the yarn, hook, and other supplies needed to create it.

Lion Brand Coboo is made of 51% cotton, 49% rayon from bamboo. It is soft, durable, and very comfortable to wear.

The free pattern includes the written instructions, link to a full pattern video tutorial, a chart, and a few photos for visual aid.

Pattern Notes:

Pattern is in US terms.

Sweater is worked from the top down, with the shoulders and chest worked in rows first, and then join to create the armholes. Body section of the sweater is worked in a continuous rounder, and sleeves and trim will be crocheted at the end in a join as you go method.

You will work in a continuous round for the heart design section, using a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of each round.

If float is held behind 5 or more stitches, catch your float halfway through.

Watch your tension throughout. Don’t pull your floats too tight or work your stitches too tight.

Sweater is fitted with 0-2” of positive ease. I recommend sizing up for a looser fit.

Fair isle section of pattern is written as number of stitches to work with what color to use as follows: 2 (MC), 2 (CC).

Row 4: ch 1, turn, 1 sc in blo of each st across. (6)

Repeats Rows 3 and 4 around entire sleeve. Join ends with sl st.

Fasten off. Repeat sleeve instructions around second armhole.

Weave in all ends. Block. (I find steam blocking works well with this yarn.)

To follow chart, start with row 1 and work left to right and top to bottom. The first fair isle round in the size you are doing is row 1 of the chart.

To change colors, instead of finishing out the last stitch before you go to the next color, pull the next color through the 2 loops for the last step of your stitch. This will finish out your last stitch and start you off with the new color for your next stitch.

To catch your float when working 7 stitches or more in the same color, simply grab your non-working yarn when working a middle stitch and then drop it again until your next color change.
