The Beach Day Ruana is so much more than a crochet swimsuit cover!
While I’m absolutely loving using it as one, it can also be worn over any outfit! This crochet ruana would be so cute over a summer dress or even just a tank top and shorts! It’s pretty perfect for any summer outfit!

Pattern Details
I created ruana in black, because honestly I couldn’t imagine it in any other color!
It looks stunning under my bright red bathing suit! Plus it’ll match any other outfit I wear it with!
The Yarn
I used Premier Yarns Cotton Fair yarn to create this design.
I absolutely love Cotton Fair for summer projects. It’s a sport (#2) weight yarn so it’s very lightweight.
This yarn is a cotton blend which makes it great to use for swim covers or anything else that may get wet.
It holds up so nicely, even after being soaked. It also has an amazing drape to it! I’ve also created my Sarasota Swimsuit Cover with Cotton Fair.
Other yarn options for this crochet ruana:
This crochet pattern is an intermediate difficulty level. It does require seaming two panels together, so you need to know how to do that. Check out my video tutorial on Sewing your Crochet Pieces Together.
The pattern comes with instructions for sizes XS to 2X.
However, the Beach Day Ruana can be adjusted in both length and width. You’ll find the stitch multiples in the crochet pattern to adjust length, and to adjust width you just add more repeats of the rows.
I also highly recommend blocking this project. Blocking will add more length and width to it alone.
But it also gives it an amazing drape! The drape will give it that flowing look and feel that we love in a cover-up. There are also instructions for an optional tie to add to the pattern so that you can close the ruana if you prefer.
I really appreciated the tie when wearing it as a swimsuit cover.

Pattern Notes:
Pattern is in US terms.
Garment is worked in 2 panels that are sewn together.
Panels will measure approximately 54” long before blocking. Blocking will add both length (up to 10”) and a bit of width to your panels. I highly recommend blocking this project.
Panels are worked by length and sewn together once completed. To add or take away length, work in multiples of 8+3.

The instructions appear to be for one size; however, I cannot see where the size is indicated or how to adjust for other sizes (the one NOT indicated). There is one statement (8+3) but indicates for adjusting length and your pictures are beautiful! Its a lovely pattern. I don’t want to start it and it be too small (or too large). Please clarify and provide guidance.
The length is the same for all sizes. You’ll see the difference in the width (number of rows) you do. The repeat Rows 7 – 31 (36, 41) is where it is different.
Thanks for the update Michelle. I didn’t buy the pattern and I cant find the ‘button’ for the Grow me app. There is no indication for the ‘sizes’ in the blog pattern. Do I need to purchase the pattern to get the size instructions? If so, what size is indicated in the blog post. I love your pattern and was going to make this one for a friend. Thank you for all your beautiful patterns!
There are three sizes, and they are on both the blog version and the pdf. The length is the same for all of the sizes, hence the same st count. The difference is in the width of the panels which will be the number of rows worked.
I’m wanting to make the beach day ruana. I don’t see where the instructions for various sizes are, just the single size, although you do say there are instructions for each size. Where can I find them? What is the size of the ruana found on your web site? (I also don’t see the button to access the grow me app, just how to pin for pinterest.) Thank you !
The length (st count) is the same for all sizes. The difference is in the number of rows you do to create the width of each panel.
In row 5, is there supposed to be a chain one after the last part of the repeat, “dc in next dc”, before starting the repeat? Or do you dc in the next dc and go straigh into dc in chain 3 space without a chain one?
Yes, there’s a chain 1 to match the beginning of the row.
