The Charlotte Cardigan is a chunky crochet cardigan that is worked from the top down and features pockets and a ribbed trim!

Pattern Inspiration

This pattern came to be when I saw the new Red Heart Essentials yarn at Michaels! I wanted to try it out and I decided to create a chunky crochet cardigan with the yarn!

I wanted this design to be very simple, so I worked it from the top down in a raglan style workup. It is worked in rows and uses just one simple stitch throughout.

At first I was unsure if I wanted pockets for this cardigan at first, so I made it so they could be optional. I ended up really liking the pockets!

I love that this cardigan can be worn in the fall or winter and just be thrown on over what you are wearing! It looks great with just about any outfit!

If you wanted to really make it your own you could add buttons!

Pattern Details

This chunky crochet cardigan calls for bulky (#5) weight yarn. I used Red Heart Soft Essentials for my cardigan.

I really enjoy working with the Soft Essentials yarn. It is 100% acrylic yarn and is very soft. It comes in a large variety of colors, including self striping options. It has a beautiful shine to it as well.

Some other yarn options would be Loops and Threads Charisma or Lion Brand Color Made Easy.

This crochet pattern comes with instructions for women’s sizes XS through 2X.

It is a top down pattern with trim and sleeves added at the end. It is sew free, except for a small amount of stitching at the pockets, which are optional.

The sleeves feature a decrease of stitches as you go down to create a fitted sleeve at the wrist.

The design uses the herringbone half double crochet stitch, which I have a tutorial for here.

Also, be sure to check out my tutorial for the ribbed trimming!

This cozy cardigan is perfect for cool spring mornings or blistery fall evenings! And this yarn is the perfect yarn for it!

  1. I have yet to try the yarn but have looked at it and touched it…so super soft. I’m waiting til it goes on sale and I have the extra cash. Looks like you have provided the perfect pattern for me as well! That is exactly the type of project that this yarn seems to lend itself to…something you want to snuggle with but not a blanket. A cardigan is perfect because you can take it off it you are too warm as opposed to a sweater. Love your new pattern and can’t wait to get my hands on both. Thanks for the awesome review and the fantastic pattern!

  2. I have some Red Heart Essentials in Pixie Stripe (bulky #5) yarn I’d like to use with my new 7mm crochet hook. I’m a size 1X. Do you know if I’d need to size down to large, or would 1X be okay?

    1. I would check your gauge with that hook and see how it comes out. You may be okay to stay with the 1X.
