Best Yarn for a Crochet baby Skirt

This cute crochet baby skirt uses worsted weight (#4) yarn. I used Lion Brand Yarn Mandala Ombre for my sample.

Mandala Ombre is such a fun yarn for little projects like this! It is a 100% acrylic yarn that gradually blends from one color to another! This yarn is super soft and comes in 12 colorways!

Two cakes of yarn, called Mandala Ombre with a crochet hook next to them.

The skirt is worked from the top down with an optional straight or ruffled trim. There is also a drawstring option to get a better fit for baby in the waist. *Please do not leave baby unattended at any time with the drawstring.

This crochet baby skirt pattern comes in 6 sizes, from newborn to 24 months!

Frequently Asked questions

Is this ruffled crochet baby skirt pattern beginner friendly?

Yes! The fun texture in this easy skirt pattern is made up of basic crochet stitches. You’ll also need to know how to do the chainless foundation single crochet (fsc). If you’ve never tried the fsc before, this pattern is a great way to learn it! And if you need a little extra help, you can always follow my foundation single crochet tutorial.

How do I know which size of crochet baby skirt to make?

Use a soft measuring tape. While the baby is wearing a close-fitting onesie, measure around the narrowest part of the waist. Keep the tape snug and straight, but not tight as you read the measurement. You want to avoid discomfort while still allowing a little room for comfort and movement.

What if my baby is in between sizes?

If your baby is between sizes, it’s best to choose the larger one so there’s room for growth. The pattern also includes instructions for adding a drawstring, which helps the skirt fit more securely at the waist while still allowing it to adjust as your baby gets bigger. If you’re making this as a gift and don’t know exact measurements, sizing up by one or two sizes is a safe and practical choice.
