The Maxwell Beanie is a men’s crochet beanie pattern from my book Crochet Makes for Men. This book includes 12 modern and masculine crochet patterns for men. Included are patterns for both garments and accessories. The garments are size inclusive, with instructions for 8 sizes, from Small to 5X. About Maxwell
The Maxwell Beanie is a unique crochet beanie pattern in that it is worked in rows, and not in the round. Working this design in rows gives the rows a vertical look on the hat, and gives the ability to create a really nice texture.
The main stitch of the hat is half double crochet, but worked in different loops to create the texture and look. You’ll also find the extended half double crochet stitch throughout this hat design.
The Maxwell Beanie has a slight slouch to it, and can easily be adjusted to give it more slouch. This beanie is lightweight and can be worn any time of year. It especially looks great with a favorite pullover or hoodie but can also be dressed up with a nice button down shirt or jacket.
The Yarn
This crochet beanie pattern calls for WeCrochet Stroll Tweed (#1) fingering yarn. This yarn is 65% fine superwash merino wool, 25% nylon, and 10% Donegal tweed.
This yarn is a beautiful tweed and comes in over 20 colorways. It can be machine washed and dried. It has a really nice rustic look to it.
Some great substitutions to use instead of this yarn are:
Stroll – 75% fine superwash merino wool, 25% nylon
Universal Sock Wool – 74% Superwash treated wool, 24% Polyamide, 2% Polyester
Rainbow Deluxe 8/4 – 100% Turkish Cotton
Hawthorne Speckle Hand-Painted – 80% superwash highland wool, 20% polyamide (nylon)
