Best Yarn for this Crochet Sun Hat pattern

I used Lion Brand 24/7 yarn to create this crochet sun hat. This 100% mercerized cotton yarn is extra sturdy and great for hats, bags, and more!

This yarn has comes with a large variety of color choices. It can be machine washed and dried as well. It’s a really great 100% cotton yarn option.

Pro tip: For this crochet sun hat pattern, you really need to use a cotton yarn. Other fibers, such as acrylic, will not give the hat the needed structure. Cotton is also breathable, which you keeps you cool when the weather heats up.

While you’ll want to stick with cotton, you can absolutely substitute a different brand. A few other options for yarn for this pattern are:

WeCrochet Dishie – 100% cotton

Lion Brand Pima Cotton – 100% cotton

Lily Sugar and Cream – 100% cotton

I have provided links to the recommended yarn and several alternatives above and in the description of the video tutorial. You can find this yarn at locally at craft stores like Michaels.

What size of sun hat should I make?

Measure the circumference of your head (or of the person who will be wearing the hat) and choose the appropriate size from the sizing chart below. When measuring, wrap the measuring tape around the head, keeping it snug and taut but not tight. If your measurements fall in between sizes, choose the larger size—especially for kids, who will grow into the hat.

Read this post to learn more about how to measure for crochet garments.

Can I personalize my crochet sun hat?

Yes, if you are an experienced crocheter and you’re comfortable making your own adjustments, feel free to experiment. For example, you could make the brim longer or shorter by adding or subtracting rows. For newer crocheters, it’s best to stick to the pattern. But you can still add your own embellishments, like ribbon, flowers, or buttons.

    1. Thank you! The links to the yarn are listed above and in the description of the video. I also believe you can find this yarn at JoAnn.

  2. Michelle, I made your hat as a quick project while on vacation. I made my brim 2 rows shorter and finished with a reverse single crochet edging. Such an easy make. Thanks for the pattern.
