Summer Crochet Top Construction

The Rosie Tee crochet pattern is worked from the top down in a raglan style rectangular yoke.

The body of the garment uses just simple double crochet stitches, while the sleeves are worked in a combo of double crochet and chain spaces.

This summer crochet top is easily adjustable to fit any size just by changing the number of increases worked in the yoke. Length can also be customized by adjusting the amount of rounds worked in the body of the garment.

There is no sewing required! There is a straight seam down the back of the top from turning each round.

The Rosie Tee crochet pattern is rated Intermediate in pattern difficulty. You will need to know chainless foundation single crochet, double crochet, and chains. Having a bit of knowledge on crocheting garments will be helpful, but isn’t necessary.

This pattern comes in women’s sizes XS to 3X.

The Yarn

The Rosie Tee summer crochet top is made using fingering (#1) weight yarn. I used the beautiful Oasis Fingering from Expression Fiber Arts.

This yarn is a blend of 50% Camel and 50% Mulberry Silk. It is very luxurious!

Some alternative yarns that would work great for this top are WeCrochet Stroll or Hawthorne Fingering. This would also be a great project for some hand dyed yarn!

Q? Can beginners crochet this top?

A. I’m all for a good challenge, and if you are too, I think this would be a great top to try at the beginning! It uses basic stitches like double crochet and chains. It is worked from the top down with new sewing required. And it is repetitive and easy to count stitches as you work.

Q? What do I wear underneath the top so it’s not see through?

A. I recommend a light camisole tank to wear under lightweight crochet garments that would otherwise be see through.

Q? Are crochet tops too warm for spring and summer?

A. If you use the right yarn, they are not! I live in Florida and I love to wear my lightweight crochet tops all year round! The key is using lightweight sport or fingering (#2 or #1) weight yarn and fabric content like cotton and linen rather than wool!

It sure is beautiful! The only thing I don’t like is that the armholes opening go too low. Not only the crocheted “fabric” bunches up which is not nice, but more importantly, the moment you stretch out your arms your whole bra will be showing. I wonder if there is a way to fix this.

  Of course you may suggest wearing another tank top underneath, but still there is the bunching of extra fabric and… where I live, summer is very hot, so wearing two layers is unthinkable.

    I’m not sure wearing this one without a tank top would work well, because it’s quite thin and a bit see through, but as far as the sleeves go you can sew the bottom of the sleeve together at the armpit to give it a slightly tighter fit and make it so nothing is showing.
